Structural, wildland, and vehicle fire response. Our crews train relentlessly to protect homes, businesses, and the forests that define this region.
First responders on scene within minutes. Cardiac arrests, trauma, and medical emergencies — we are the bridge between crisis and care.
Mountain rescues, vehicle extrication, and water rescue along the South Toe River. Rugged terrain is our home ground — and we know it.
Station tours, smoke alarm installations, and school programs. Prevention saves more lives than any response — we invest in both.
Hazard mapping, building inspections, and emergency preparedness planning. We work proactively so crises never reach our doors.
Round-the-clock emergency communications. Call 911 from anywhere in our jurisdiction — help is on the way, always.
South Toe Fire & Rescue was founded in 1974 by a handful of Burnsville residents who believed their community deserved reliable emergency protection — no matter how remote the address or how harsh the weather.
Today, our volunteer department covers a wide service area across Yancey County, from the downtown square to the most isolated mountain ridges. We respond to hundreds of calls each year — structure fires, vehicle accidents on winding highways, medical emergencies, and search operations in some of the most rugged terrain in the Blue Ridge.
Every member of our department serves without pay. They are teachers, tradespeople, farmers, and neighbors who trade their evenings and weekends for the chance to stand between a community and catastrophe.
South Toe Fire & Rescue exists because people like you chose to show up. Whether you become a volunteer firefighter, donate equipment, or simply know the number by heart — your involvement keeps this community safe.
For emergencies, always dial 911. For non-emergency inquiries, station visits, or to learn about volunteering, reach us directly.
